Google is using CES to push its smart assistant technology to just about every aspect of the home, much the way Amazon did with Alexa last year. The newest pairing is with DISH, the satellite TV service, allowing users to not even bother with a remote.
The Google Assistant will be compatible with DISH's Hopper DVR, Joey client, or Wally single-tuner HD receiver to control their TV once it is paired with Google Home, Android phones or iPhones. The integration should be complete within the first half of the year.
Users will be able to tell the assistant such things as "change channel to ESPN," "find the Big Bang Theory," or "Search for Game of Thrones." The assistant is also capable of the usual DVR commands of play, pause, fast-forward, and rewind.
"Throughout 2017, DISH took major strides toward building a suite of voice control options for our customers, including a new DISH voice remote," DISH Vice President of Product Management Niraj Desai said in a press release. "We're pleased to be working with the Google Assistant to offer our customers the ability to control Hopper's video experiences through the Assistant on speakers and phones."
Of course, this isn't the first assistant that DISH has integrated for its customers. It brought Alexa to its products in May of last year. However, that only worked with its Hopper and Wally receivers.
When the technology is launched later this year, users will need an internet-connected Hopper DVR, Joey client, or Wally HD receiver so they can use Google Assistant to control their TV when connected to Google Home or smartphone.
What voice controls come with Google Assistant? Voice controls such as play, pause, fast-forward, or rewind, and change channels are expected, in addition to searching content by favorite channel, title, actor or a specific genre. Making it much easier to tune into popular channels such as Disney, ESPN, Food Network, or History Channel.
Below are some other commands users will be able to ask Google Assistant:
"Change channel to ESPN
"Tune to channel 130"
"Go to the History Channel"
"Find the Big Bang Theory"
"Search for Game of Thrones"
"Search for home improvement shows"
"Show me Tom Hanks movies"
"Play This is Us"
"Skip forward"
"Rewind 30 seconds"
"Pause"
"Resume"
It's just like using Google Assistant on the Android phone or tablet but for the TV. All users have to say is "OK Google," followed by a question. A good example, if users want to watch Game of Thrones, they would simply say "OK Google, search for Game of Thrones" and before they know it, Google Assistant will show the latest episodes of HBO's Game of Thrones.
Now, the company offers a way for those who speak multiple languages to enjoy Google Assistant with Dish.
"This marks the first time that DISH customers with a Hopper, Joey or Wally can use voice to control their TV in multiple languages, including English and Spanish," the company wrote in a press release.
This isn't the first time the satellite provider wanted to enhance the way their customers interact with the technology they use in their home every day. Just last year, the TV provider introduced a new Voice Remote, along with adding Amazon Alexa support to its receivers.
Recent reports have revealed that Dish has announced that they are working with Google to make the integration of the Google Assistant possible on their devices. Furthermore, it seems that Dish will be taking it one step farther with support for multiple languages.
"Throughout 2017, DISH took major strides toward building a suite of voice control options for our customers, including a new DISH voice remote," said Niraj Desai, DISH vice president of product management said in a statement. "We're pleased to be working with the Google Assistant to offer our customers the ability to control Hopper's video experiences through the Assistant on speakers and phones."
Further reports also reveal that the Google Assistant integration will have support for multiple languages, including English and Spanish. Starting in the first quarter of 2018, customers of the company will be able to use Google Assistant to control their TV through voice commands. This includes commands like: "Change channel to ESPN," "Show me Tom Hanks movies," and "Search for Game of Thrones." They will also be able to use Google Assistant to navigate through the videos by asking the artificial intelligence to play or pause it.
For owners of the Hopper DVRs, there will be an available voice remote that was recently released and will be shipped at no additional cost. The support will be coming to all models of Joey, Wally, and Hopper. Dish did not reveal a specific release date for each of the devices but they did confirm that it will slowly roll out over the course of the year. Fans are expecting full support to start by the middle of the year and full integration by the end of 2018. In the meantime, Dish also shared a list of commands that can be used with the Google Assistant, and fans are advised to check the full list out.
