Elaborate security arrangements have been put in place for the International Yoga Day celebration at Rajpath on Thursday, a senior Delhi Police officer said.
More than 500 police and paramilitary personnel have been deployed to keep an eye on suspicious elements. There will be 78 door frame metal detectors (DFMD) points for entry where visitors will be scanned, he added.
The country is all geared up to roll out yoga mats to mark the fourth International Day of Yoga, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi scheduled to lead about 55,000 enthusiasts in performing asanas in Dehradun on Thursday.
The yoga event at Rajpath will be attended by Union minister Harsh Vardhan, Delhi L-G Anil Baijal, chief minister Arvind Kejriwal and New Delhi MP Meenakshi Lekhi.
The Delhi Traffic Police has issued an advisory asking motorists to avoid Rafi Marg, Janpath, Man Singh Road, Maulana Azad Road, Rajpath (between Vijay Cheok and Man Singh crossing), Krishna Menon Marg, K Kam Raj Marg and Rajender Prasad Road till 10 am on Thursday.
The advisory asked motorists to take alternate routes -- Ring Road, Mathura Road, Bhairon Marg, Subarmaniyam Bharti Marg, Rajesh Pilot Marg, Dr Abdul Kalam Road, Tuglak Road, Mother Teresa Crescent Marg to travel from south to north and vice-versa, and from east to west and vice-versa.
In Delhi, eight events have been planned in the national capital with the main celebration being held in the Connaught Place.
The centrepiece of the first yoga day celebration in 2015 was New Delhi’s Rajpath, with the event making it to the Guinness World Records with 35,985 participants performing asanas at one venue and 84 nationalities being part of it.
The United Nations General Assembly in December 2014 had declared that June 21 would be observed as International Day of Yoga every year, a move for which India had lobbied hard.

International Yoga Day 2018: The International Yoga Day is all set to be celebrated across the globe on Thursday i.e on June 21. After it was introduced by the United Nations for the first time on June 21, 2015, the day is celebrated every year. The main aim to celebrate this day is to create an awareness worldwide on the importance of staying fit and healthy. The theme for this year’s International Yoga Day is ‘Yoga for peace.’
Prime Minister Narendra Modi while addressing the United Nations in 2014 had suggested that June 21 be celebrated as the international Yoga Day globally every year. The UN, after much consideration on December 11, 2014, decided to celebrate International Yoga Day every year on June 21. The word Yoga has been originated from Sanskrit word Yuja, which means ‘to join or unite’

On the occasion of the first International Yoga Day, over 35,900 people performed at the at the national capital’s Rajpath. Apart from the prime minister, a large number of dignitaries including from 84 nations participated at the event. The event had created two Guinness Book of World records. First with the participation of 35,985 people and second. as many as 84 nations participating in the event.

This year, PM Narendra Modi will participate in a Yoga event in Dehradun. Over 60,000 people are expected to participate in the event. Yoga guru Baba Ramdev will conduct a yoga session in Kota at RC Ground.



Padma Vibhushan Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev will be with army personnel at the Siachen base camp on the day. He is likely to speak to the soldiers on a number of issues including the importance of Yoga for well-being, inner balance at high altitudes and health. The army personnel will be trained scientifically designed yoga modules under his guidance. A number of other Yoga gurus and experts withhold yoga training sessions across the country and abroad.

Yoga sessions will be held across the world to mark the day, picked by the United Nations to celebrate the ancient Indian practice that has spread across the globe.
Indian missions abroad are also coordinating activities, officials said, to mark the UN day for which the country had lobbied hard.
 
Five thousand yoga events will be held in India, an AYUSH ministry official said.
Eight events are planned in New Delhi alone with the main one at Rajpath, where Modi showcased a series of asanas on the first Yoga Day in 2015.
The biggest show in the country this time will be on the lawns of the Forest Research Institute (FRI) in the lap of the Himalayas in Uttarakhand's capital Dehradun.
“Yoga is not just a set of exercises that keeps the body fit. It is a passport to health assurance, a key to fitness and wellness. Nor is yoga only what you practise in the morning,” a statement quoting Modi said.
“Doing your day-to-day activities with diligence and complete awareness is a form of yoga as well,” it said
Union ministers Rajnath Singh, Nitin Gadkari, Suresh Prabhu, Uma Bharti, Ram Vilas Paswan, Ravi Shankar Prasad will be in Lucknow, Nagpur, Chennai, Rudraprayag, Hajipur and Patna respectively for Yoga Day, a BJP functionary said.
Among other ministers, Ananth Kumar will be in Bengaluru, J P Nadda in Shimla, Narendra Singh Tomar in Gwalior, Piyush Goyal in Noida and Prakash Javadekar in Mumbai.
Around 50,000 yoga enthusiasts including women personnel from paramilitary forces like BSF, CRPF and CISF will participate in an event at Delhi's Red Fort organised by the Brahma Kumaris.
The AYUSH Ministry has launched mobile app ‘Yoga Locator' to help people find a yoga session. The Women and Child Development Ministry is promoting “#YogaFor9to5”, a contest to generate awareness on the benefits of yoga for women at workplace.
In Dehradun, there is a massive deployment of security personnel in and around the Forest Research Institute, building up over the last few days.
Nashik-based yoga promoter Vishwas Mandalik and the Yoga Institute in Mumbai have been selected for this year's prime minister's award for outstanding contribution in the field.
The selection was done from among 186 nominations received under different categories.
In Lucknow, All India Muslim Personal Law Board said yoga should not be used as a political tool or linked to a particular community.
"Islam lays special emphasis on physical fitness and considers things related to fitness as good. Yoga as an exercise is good, but it should not be made compulsory which may not be acceptable to people of other religions,” spokesman told PTI.
"The most important thing is that yoga should not be used as a political tool. But sadly this practice is going on," Sajjad Nomani said.
Last year, the main Yoga Day function was in Lucknow.

1. Rooftop Yoga at the Renaissance Center


 
If you want to gaze out over the Detroit River while feeling more connected to the earth then this is the place for you.
Yoga teacher and Detroiter Amanda Taveras is leading a special Yoga Day class at 7:30 a.m. on Thursday on the rooftop of the Beaubien garage at the Renaissance Center. She said she likes to take moments during her yoga classes to reflect on the direction her life has taken.
"When we go through the ritual of sun salutations to salute the sun, I always ask everyone to set their intentions on what they wish to encourage and develop in their lives moving forward," she said.
She also leads this free rooftop class every Wednesday during the summer at 5 p.m.

2. Actually go international


 
Detroiters can travel four miles and cross the Detroit River to visit Windsor, Ontario, this weekend to celebrate yoga with an international focus.
Participate in a morning of free yoga on Sunday in Malden Park at 4200 Malden Rd. The event starts at 9:30 a.m. so bring your yoga mats and enthusiasm to the park.

3. Celebrate with local vendors and food

If you want to engage in a well-rounded celebration of the summer solstice, then head down to East Grand Boulevard on Thursday.
Starseed Yoga will lead a class at 7:30 p.m. Then, starting at 9 p.m., you can shop, snack and craft with different local vendors. It costs $25 if you buy the tickets in advance and $30 at the door.

4. Go to a 'Yoga is Yours' class

Yoga teachers are leading this special class called "Yoga is Yours" at the Downtown Boxing Gym in Detroit on East Vernor Highway on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.. It's hosted by lululemon Detroit.
All tickets are $5 and the proceeds go to the students at the gym.

5. Meditate with a group or by yourself


 
Meditation is one of the best ways to center yourself after a long day, without the back bending and stretching that goes into yoga.
One such meditation event is called "Meditation for Beginners," held by the Inner Engineering Detroit group. Inner Engineering, according to the group's event website,is a way to "transcend the limitations of who you are and bring you to higher levels of consciousness."
This class is being held on Thursday at 5 p.m. at the Inner Balance Yoga Studio in Livonia. It's free to the public. 

6. Celebrate Yoga Day throughout the week


 
If you just can't swing the time on Thursday to honor the earth, then you're in luck.
You can combine puppy love and body love at puppy yoga at Michigan Massage and Wellness in Troy. Puppy social time starts at 6 p.m. and the actual yoga class starts at 6:30 p.m. They have another session at 7:30 p.m. Tickets start at $20 and the proceeds benefit Canine Companions Rescue Center.
Also, the Bhartiya Temple in Troy is holding a yoga class where participants learn basic benefits and simple techniques on Sunday at 8 a.m.
There are also plenty of regular yoga classes on weekends at local studios.

7. Go to your local yoga studio

Keep it simple and visit a studio in your area, either one that you've been to before or always wanted to try. What better day to sign up for your first yoga class than on International Yoga Day?
A2 Yoga in Ann Arbor has been voted the best yoga studio in Washtenaw County for 15 years running. They have four different yoga classes on Thursday, ranging from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. start times.
