LG V30,Verizon LG V30,LG V40 ThinQ Codenamed,LG V30 Receives AI-Focused ThinQ Android Update On Verizon

Verizon LG V30 owners receive update giving their phone AI CAM and ThinQ name

Verizon is performing a little magic on its variant of the LG V30. They are waving a magic wand (borrowed from Harry Potter, of course) and turning the LG V30 into the LG V30 ThinQ. The update, which carries software version VS99620b, adds AI CAM to the handset's camera. This allows the camera to analyze the subject and recommend one of four filters available. Each filter optimizes certain settings like contrast, saturation and color. these recommendations are made after the AI CAM places the subject of a photograph into one of eight different categories such as "people, pets, food, flowers, city, landscape (sea/sky), sunset or sunrise."

Another change is seen when the phone boots up. The boot screen now shows that the phone has been magically transformed into the LG V30 ThinQ. Check out the before and after images at the top of this story. Keep in mind that this is NOT the LG V30S ThinQ, which was unveiled at MWC in February and includes extra RAM and more internal storage. But the point is that LG is pushing AI and wants everything, from its smart speakers to refrigerators, to be under the ThinQ branding umbrella.

The OTA update also features the March Android security update. And as always, we recommend that users follow two basic rules before starting to update their handset. Make sure that the phone is connected to a Wi-Fi network (Verizon adds that a strong Verizon network connection will also suffice), and that the battery is fully charged.

Maybe Big Red isn't pulling a rabbit out of a hat, but we think that Verizon customers with the LG V30 in hand will appreciate this magic a lot more.
LG is having quite a unusual year after first delaying the G7 ThinQ. According to Blass, the LG V35 ThinQ may arrive at the same time as the LG G7, which would mean a May or June release. The LG V40 ThinQ is said to be in the works and it's supposedly being called internally as "Storm", according to notorious leaker Evan Blass. At this point, we don't have any details on the LG V35 and LG V40 but we're assuming they will be ThinQ devices as well just like the upcoming LG G7. A late summer or early fall release for the LG V40 ThinQ would mean it could get here in August or September. There's also the LG Stylo 4 which could be out next month. This was a surprise to many and it may have been the first sign that LG was indeed changing up its smartphone strategy. LG had already unveiled its 2018 version of its V30 flagship earlier this year and labelled it as the LG V30S ThinQ and from the looks of it, the company has another V-series phone planned for a launch later this year. It's speculated that the LG G7 ThinQ will come with a new Voice AI that will let users use voice commands alongside its Vision AI and Empathy AI. With that in mind, it seems safe to assume that the V40 ThinQ will be a flagship Android phone powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845. The LG V40 is assumed to be the follow-up to the premium V30, but we haven't heard too much about it besides its rumored code name and ThinQ branding (pronounced "thin queue"). Shortly after, Blass cleared up a bit of confusion some were having with the release of the company's V series of smartphones. The company reported a total operating loss of 213.2 billion won ($192 million) in Q4 2017, which was actually slightly better than what analysts expected since the LG V30 had strong sales. The V35 follows the LG V30S announced during the Mobile World Congress.
Verizon started distributing a new software update to all variants of the LG V30 on its network, the wireless carrier disclosed earlier this week, with the firmware package in question being largely focused on artificial intelligence features which already launched with the V30S ThinQ. The South Korean original equipment manufacturer is now also referring to its 2017 Android flagship as the V30 ThinQ, with the name being meant to be indicative of the fact that the updated device now boasts a wide variety of new AI functionalities, including automated camera improvements.
The new software package is close to 850MB in size and ships with the March security patch, whereas Verizon’s rollout is gradual in nature and is hence expected to take several weeks until it’s completed, i.e. have the update become available on a national level. The main new addition to the device comes in the form of an enhanced camera which is now capable of recognizing the subjects of your shots and adjusting its shooting settings accordingly so as to maximize the potential of every image. Besides scene recommendations, the revamped software offers new camera filters and should perform in an even more consistent manner than before, as suggested by the official changelog of the update shared by Verizon.
LG is expected to announce its next high-end Android offering early next month, with the company also already working on a “true” successor to the V30. According to recent reports, the LG V40 is code-named “Storm” and will be released by early fall, i.e. around the same time its predecessor launched. On the other hand, the G7 is only set to be announced on May 2, more than fourteen months after LG unveiled the G6. The company has been rethinking its mobile strategy this year in an effort to revive its struggling smartphone business which lost over half a billion dollars in the second half of 2017 alone.
