Powermat — the company behind providing consumers with wireless charging pads within retail locations — is introducing a new way to charge your device. Known as Charging Spot 4.0, the new platform is less of a hassle to install and is compatible with more devices.
You might have already seen one of Powermat’s wireless charging spots at a Starbucks location but it is also available at airports, malls, arenas, and other coffee shops. By downloading the app, it will be able to tell you where the closest one is based on your location.
When customers walk into a public space that offers the charging stations, they are able to set their phones down on the table to begin to charge wirelessly. But for those whose smartphones aren’t compatible, the company offers a Powermat Ring to plug into your phone which then transfers the power wirelessly.
But in its latest venture, Powermat could make its charging spots more accessible for both retailers and consumers. Rather than requiring expensive installation, Charging Spot 4.0 can be easily placed under the table without having to drill into furniture. It’s also capable of transferring power through surfaces that range from 0.5 to 1.5 inches thick.
All that is required is installing what looks like a small black plate underneath the table with two screws. On top of the table, you place a circular sticker which will act as the charging spot to place your phone. With cables remaining under the table, the surface can stay neat and clean from clutter.
Regardless of the device you’re planning on charging, you only need one sticker. While it can only charge one device at a time, the sticker is compatible with smartphones, laptops, wearables, and tablets. But there can also be eight charging spots installed on one power supply.
With its SmartInductive Technology, Charging Spot 4.0 can support zero to 40 watts of charging power on a single platform. It also has universal support and is compatible with Qi, AFA inductive, Apple’s 7.5-watt wireless charging, and fast-charging capabilities for Android.
In addition to unveiling its latest platform, Powermat also announced it has joined the Wireless Power Consortium in an effort to add to the Qi ecosystem. It’s now one of more than 360 companies supporting the Qi standard alongside Samsung, LG, Apple, and more.
New Apple patent application hints at long-range wireless ranging
If you’re an iPhone user or planning to become one, this is a great news for you. A patent product with a new technology was filed by Apple which suggests wireless charging of future iPhones from across the room.
According to the officially published notes by US Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO), this new product will be “configured to wireless transmit power over the wireless power transfer link.” It means that this new system may charge multiple devices simultaneously with both wired as well as wireless connections.
Apple is currently focusing on short range wireless charging only because long range wireless charging is not feasible. Because as the distance increases from the charger, power decreases rapidly and there’s a limited amount of power which can be transmitted to single device.
This RF-based short range wireless charger would allow users to set up their wireless charging devices in a certain order. This method will link a single power adapter to various electronic devices in its proximity.
Here is an excerpt of the patent filings’ summary:
A system having a power adapter may supply power to electronic devices. Electronic devices with battery could be charged such as smartphones, laptops, tablets, PCs, smartwatches, fitness bands etc. Charging to the electronic devices would occur both using wired as well as wireless medium. The system with an online user account, will create a communication network and would be connected to the charging devices in its proximity. The system will save information from user such as battery state, priority of charging devices, usage history, calendar and few other information. And this system will transfer different amount of power to different devices connected to it using an optimum power transfer strategy.
Patents doesn’t necessarily mean something solid. Hence, nothing further can be suggested. But this definitely tells that Apple is working hard on creating a wireless charging device. Let’s see when Apple confirms this news officially.
.
The reason for this is that the power bank forms only part of the package here. As in addition to the power bank, the WiBa dual-charging wireless power system also includes a Qi charging pad. In short, this is designed to not only be a charger you use at home when charging your device, but also a charger you can use while out and about. Topping off the charging capabilities of the WiBa dual-charging wireless power system, the charging pad is able to charge both the smartphone and the power bank at the same time. And of course, all wirelessly. All the user has to do is stack the power bank on top of the charging pad, and then the wireless phone on top of the power bank (as shown below). When the user is away from home, the power bank will keep devices charged in much the same way – by placing the phone directly on top of the power bank. As this is a Qi-based charger it is one that works with all Qi-compatible devices, including the latest from Samsung – the Galaxy Note 8 and Galaxy S8.
The power bank seems to be the original WiBa wireless power bank which the company first announced in January of last year and comes equipped with a 5,000 mAh capacity. Therefore, how many times it can charge a compatible smartphone will depend on the capacity of the smartphone, although most phones will certainly be able to get at least one full charge before the power bank needs to be recharged. While the company has yet to specifically confirm when the WiBa dual-charging wireless power system will be available to buy, it is expected to start shipping at some point in February of this year. In the meantime, Avido will be showcasing its new all-in-one wireless power bank and home charging solution at this year’s CES show.
