ZTE Plans To Launch 5G Smartphone in The US By 2019 , II ZTE says their folding Axon M is just the start , II ZTE looks to launch its first 5G smartphone by early 2019

At CES 2018, CEO of ZTE, Lixin Cheng revealed that the company plans to release a 5G smartphone at the end of the year or early 2019.

5G was one of the major topics discussed at the event this year. Its applications span several sectors and will change or greatly improve how we do things.
Mr. Cheng says the company may also add a 5G tablet or a wireless-internet hub for homes. Some carriers such as AT&T already announced plans to test 5G services in about 12 cities. Qualcomm is also already working on 5G chips that will drive devices. For ZTE to achieve its plans, it needs  the carriers and also chips from Qualcomm.
However, things may not be so smooth. Authorities in the US are scrutinizing Chinese smartphone makers. Last year, ZTE was fined by the US for selling technology to Iran. Huawei also had its deal with AT&T fall apart this week. There are also reports that a proposed bill may ban devices and services from both companies
Some Chinese manufacturers do offer their phones in the US unlocked but working with a carrier helps boost their popularity among consumers. ZTE is not new to selling phones via carriers. Its latest phone, the Axon M is sold by AT&T. However, if the bill is passed, it will affect the scheme of things.

Other manufacturers are also working on 5G in their own way but have not made any announcements about phones yet. Samsung is partnering with Verizon this month to test 5G in parts of California. Apple has also gotten permission to begin testing 5G networking.

There has been an increasing momentum around folding smartphones, which would let smartphone screen sizes escape from the confines of being pocketable.
Despite interest from a number of companies it was ZTE which brought the first modern smartphone with a dual-screen design, the ZTE Axon M, exclusive to AT&T.
The device has had a middling reception, with reviewers criticizing the thickness of the device and Android’s somewhat clunky support for dual screens.
This does not seem to have put the company off, however, with  ZTE’s vice president of marketing Jeff Yee telling Engadget in an interview at CES 2018 that consumers who purchased the device like it, and that associated issues were simply because it’s “something new.”
He said the company planned to continue to support it with further updates but would also continue to experiment with the form factor, including reducing bezel size and eventually eliminating the dual-screen design for a completely seamless screen.
The space is expected to heat up over the next year, with Microsoft apparently working on their rumoured Surface Phone, which is expected to share significant design elements with the ZTE Axon M, while Samsung is believed to be preparing for the next generation with a proper folding screen of around 7.3 inches in size.

  • ZTE announced it would release a 5G smartphone in late 2018 or early 2019.
  • The company’s plans are dependent on 5G network rollouts and chipsets.
  • ZTE would be one of the first companies to release a 5G smartphone.

ZTE might not have had a strong presence during CES 2018, but Lixin Cheng, the CEO of the company’s US arm, still made a splash by announcing ZTE will launch a 5G-capable smartphone by early 2019.
In an interview with Bloomberg, Cheng confirmed the device would be introduced either in late 2018 or early 2019, though that depends on availability of 5G networks and the requisite chipsets. There is currently no wide availability of a 5G network, though AT&T and Verizon announced they would begin rolling out their respective 5G networks by the end of 2018.
Meanwhile, Sprint said it aims to commercialize 5G services by late 2019. The carrier also looks to reach 5G through its deployment of its 2.5 GHz Massive MIMI radios, which will be software-upgradeable to 5G NR, sometime in 2018.

Finally, T-Mobile looks to deploy its 5G network in 2020, which would put the carrier in somewhat of an awkward position in terms of 5G networking.
So yes, support for 5G is a bit all over the place, which will affect ZTE’s plans. Also affecting the company’s aims is Qualcomm, which develops the new chips that take advantage of the upcoming network.
A potentially larger roadblock, however, is a recently-proposed bill that would ban Huawei and ZTE services in the US. Even though the bill is in its earliest stages and still has to navigate through the red tape that is the US government, it pushes the notion that Chinese companies like ZTE is bad news for the US.
The potential obstacle has not dissuaded ZTE from possibly launching a 5G-capable tablet or wireless-internet hub for homes, in addition to its 5G smartphone.
Regardless of the device, ZTE will likely be one of the first companies to launch a 5G smartphone, but that is not to say others do not have plans of their own. For example, Samsung partnered with Verizon to deploy 5G internet in some California homes, while Apple is reportedly working closely with Intel for 5G networking on future iPhones.
