Twitter adds more security options for verification II , Set Up Twitter's Two-Step Authentication To Work With Third-Party Apps II , Twitter Update: New Authentication Method Switches To Third-Party Apps From SMS
Recent reports have revealed that social media giant Twitter is ramping up its security measures as they have introduced a new two-factor authentication measure that supports third-party apps instead of SMS.
"Login verification is an extra layer of security for your Twitter account. Instead of only entering a password to log in, you'll also enter a code which is sent to your mobile phone. This verification helps make sure that you, and only you, can access your account," Twitter said in a statement. "After you enable this feature, you will need both your password and your mobile phone to log in to your account."
The update is significant in security measures. The Verge notes that this is because, the SMS-based two-factor authentication uses static code that can be intercepted in the event of a hacking or a malicious third-party that can view or access the messages on the users' personal device. In contrast, the new update has support for apps like Google Authenticator, which erases authentication and access code in approximately 30 seconds, making it a safer alternative in authenticating accounts.
Despite the update, SMS will still be utilized for Twitter mainly for account recovery. To take advantage of the new update, Twitter has given out instructions on how to use it with a third-party app, among others. For those interested, they would have to go to settings in through the profile icon and select account. Under security, users will have to select "review your login verification methods" which will prompt them to enter their password. The selections should include an option for set up which will lead to another option for Mobile security app. After that, Twitter has programmed in specific instructions on how to proceed depending on the type of authentication.
If you have two-factor authentication set up on your Twitter account (which you absolutely should and if you don't you should set up right now), then now you don't have to have to use SMS to get access to your account.
Now you can use a third-party app such as Google Authenticator, Duo Mobile, or Authy instead. That can come particularly in handy if you're somewhere like another country (or your friend's office) where you don't have a cell signal and want to get into your account.
To set things up to work with a third-party authenticator app you'll first need to change your Twitter settings from SMS, which is on by default, to a Security app. To do that, click on your Profile icon on Twitter and then select Settings. From there, click Account and then Security.
In that menu, you'll see that text message is on by default. Click Edit to turn it off and then enable the Security app feature (below it) instead.
To set up a separate third-party app, in the top menu, click your profile icon, then click Settings and privacy then select the Account tab. Click the "Review your login verification methods" to get started. You'll be prompted to enter your Twitter password. After you do, click Set up and then follow the on-screen instructions.
Eventually, you'll see a pop-up window displaying a QR code. You will need to scan the QR code in your authenticator app to connect it to your Twitter account. Your app will then give you a 6-digit numeric security code that you'll have to enter into Twitter to complete the connection.
One Lifehacker writer also reported after disabling text two-factor he had to re-enable it before I could enable mobile-app-based two-factor. If you run into trouble along the way, try that.
The whole process definitely takes a few minutes, but it's totally worth it.
SAN FRANCISCO,USA – Twitter announced an update on its two-factor authentication (2FA), the update will fully support third-party apps.
Twitter’s new login verification feature will let you use apps like Google Authenticator and Authy to verify. Before you had to use a code sent to you via text message.
This is important because SMS-based 2FA, although it’s tied to an individual phone number, uses static codes.
That means that a hacker could intercept codes or any malicious third-party could access and view messages on a device.
With 2FA apps like Google Authenticator, the codes disappear in about 30 seconds, making it a more secure way to verify your identify and access your account.
Note that you still need a phone number to set up 2FA on Twitter because it’s used for account recovery.
If you want to use the new feature, See Twiter’s login verification support page that outline how to enable a third-party 2FA app and how to turn off text messages.
We’re rolling out an update to login verification. You’ll now be able to use a third party app for two-factor authentication instead of SMS text messages.https://t.co/UXl3xKLEaG
